Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirements

Before you start your training to become a nurse assistant, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Complete a CDPH-approved training program in California that includes an exam to assess your knowledge and skills in basic patient care.
  • Be able to pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting (Live Scan service).

Step 2: Complete a State-Approved CNA Training Program or Equivalency (Including Foreign Nursing Transcripts)

You must complete a certified CNA training program approved by California’s Healthcare Professional Certification Training Section (HPCTS). These programs are offered through:

Training programs cover essential nursing skills, patient care, infection control, and emergency procedures. The training includes both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience to prepare you for real-world patient care.

If you’re studying or have finished certain nursing programs, have military medical training, or already have a license (in the US or abroad), you may qualify to take the Competency Evaluation.

Step 3: Pass the CNA Competency Exam

After you complete your training, you must pass the California CNA competency exam that evaluates your nursing knowledge and practical skills through:

  • Multiple choice exam
  • Clinical skills evaluation

Step 4: Apply for Certification

Once you pass the exam, apply for your official CNA certificate through the CDPH Healthcare Professional Certification Training Section. You can submit your application online using the OASYS electronic application system.

Required documents include:

  • Proof of completed training
  • Competency exam results
  • Live Scan fingerprinting results
  • Application form and fee

Step 5: Maintain Your Certification

Your CNA certification must be renewed every two years. To renew:

  • Submit the renewal application online
  • Complete required continuing education or in-service training as mandated by California regulations
  • Maintain good standing with no disqualifying criminal convictions or professional misconduct
